DFI Day 1

I survived. The day was very interesting, informative, hands on, fast, enjoyable, challenging, positive, practical. Full on.

It was good to go over the back story of Manaiakalani as part of the learning part.

A couple of points stood out for me ...

Firstly, our schools, staff, students and whanau have undertaken a lot of change being part of the Manaiakalani kaupapa and before making changes we need to gather evidence - our students are not guinea pigs. All students have the right to equity. We can’t do it on our own. We are in this for the long haul. How exciting! What a privilege to be part of this journey together. I am hooked!

Secondly, the Chromebook is the pencil not the book.

One thing I am wondering about as I went through the day is running a 'DFI' for parents. We could cover aspects such as:

  • Background story

  • Google Chrome

  • Hapara (Learning visible)

  • Site (Learning and teaching made visible)

  • Blogs and commenting

  • Being cyber smart

The Google doc 101 was very useful - especially the headings and titles, explore and remove.bg for images. What was covered was applicable to me as a leader - not just teachers. Much appreciated.

In the create part I made this 'fabulous' image for our local curriculum. This is my second attempt. It is a small improvement from my first attempt. Third time... I will employ a graphic designer! I will stick to my day job!

Attempt 1 (last year)

Attempt 2 (today)

  1. Hi Jane

It's wonderful to have you with us on the DFI cohort, I'm so pleased you've taken time out to do so.
Great idea to get whanau engaged with more of the kaupapa. We do of course have a range of resources that would support whanau training. Maybe something to think about in term three with Jacob coming on board ;)

By the end of the DFI, you'll be a graphic design whizz :)

  2. Kia ora Jane,

As Kerry said, it's great to have you with us on the DFI this term. I love the idea of a DFI type session for whānau. I think the headings tool in Google docs is so useful - especially for those longer docs. The table of contents is so helpful, as is being able to direct someone to a certain part of a lengthy doc by using the headings URL.

  3. Hi Jane

I am so excited to be working with you on your DFI journey. You often inspire me with your pearls of wisdom and your love of learning not just for your students but also for yourself, your staff and your whanau.

Don't stress about the google draws and needing a graphic designer, like everything the more we use it the better we get at it - But please don't give up your day job!

Jane, I wonder what strategies you will use to get parent buy in to your whanau evening idea. It is such a fantastic idea and I know we have talked about it at Ohaeawai many times, so would be good to share ideas if this goes ahead.
